In my last blog I mentioned Asthma UK’s bid to become Lloyds TSB Group’s charity of the Year. Unfortunately with fundraising there is always bad news as well as good, and we were unsuccessful on this occasion. This was a real shame, but the bid did provide a great opportunity to raise awareness of asthma to the 69,000 Lloyds TSB Group employees.
This experience reflects a problem that many charities face when reaching the staff vote - how to make your cause appealing and stand out against all the other worthy causes out there.
5.2 million people in the UK have asthma. For businesses, this means that asthma will affect a significant proportion of their workforce and customers, and we work hard to try and get this message across.
Some of the companies we have worked with in the past have helped us make a real difference to people with asthma.
For example, Topps Tiles funded the Asthma Morbidity Project in 2005. This made funds available for local asthma projects to be run in areas whew rates of asthma were particularly high. Projects like this have a huge impact on asthma services and help to bring hospital admissions down, as people learn how to better manage their asthma.
We would love to hear from companies that would like to help support our work, or people who feel that asthma is often underestimated.
